Black Magic Jell-O Shots

Jell-O shots are a classic party cocktail with tons of colors and flavors to choose from. In the spirit of Halloween and ‘all things creepy’, I decided to share Kotzbach's Black Magic Jell-O Shots recipe. They're easy to make, fun, tasty and appealing to the eye. It takes a total of THREE hours, but the combination of Berry blue, Grape, Vodka and black sanding sugar makes it worth the wait.

Prep Time: 5 Minutes Cooking Time: 10 Minutes Chilling Time: 2 Hours & 45 Minutes

Total Time: 3 Hours

Here's what you'll need:

Blue Layer:

  • 3 ounces of Berry Blue Jell-O mix (1/2 cup of powder mix)

  • 1 cup of boiling water

  • 1/2 cup of cold water

  • 1/2 of Vodka

Purple Layer:

  • 3 ounces of Grape Jell-O mix (1/2 cup of powder mix)

  • 1 cup of boiling water

  • 1/2 cup of cold water

  • 1/2 cup of Vodka

Supplies:

  • 2 OUNCE plastic cups with lids (24 count)

  • Black Sanding Sugar, for additional sweetness and sparkle

Ready? Set. Go!

Blue Layer:

1. Place the Jell-O mix powder in a medium bowl

2. Add 1 cup of boiling water to the powder and whisk to combine

  • until the powder is dissolved

3. Add the cold water and Vodka

  • whisk to combine

4. Fill each plastic cup halfway with blue Jell-O

5. Place the cups in the refrigerator and chill for 45 minutes

  • until the Jell-O is just about to set

Purple Layer:

1. Place the Jell-O mix powder in a medium bowl

2. Add 1 cup of boiling water to the powder and whisk to combine

  • until the powder is dissolved

3. Remove the plastic cups from the refrigerator and carefully pour the purple Jell-O over the blue Jell-O

  • creating the layers - filling each cup to the top

4. Place the cups back into the refrigerator and chill for 1-2 Hours

  • until completely set

Finishing Up:

1. Remove the cups from the refrigerator and sprinkle the top of each shot with black sugar

  • DO NOT completely mask the purple, but there should be a good layer of sugar

2. Place a lid on each cup and refrigerate - until ready to serve (or put out at your party)

3. Enjoy :)

Side Notes from Epsy

  1. You can substitute the Vodka with MALIBU

  2. You can leave the black sugar out completely if you're worried about stained lips

  3. Make the JELL-O for the purple layer right after you put the blue layer in the refrigerator - Then let the purple layer cool off while the blue layer sets: That way the hotter JELL-O won't melt the first layer when you add it
