National Suicide Prevention Month

Updated: Oct 10, 2021

Preventing Suicide, Together

For so long I didn't understand the true meaning of September. It was always just another month I had to get through. That was until I discovered September is National Suicide Prevention Month.

During this time mental health advocates, organizations, communities and survivors come together to raise awareness on taboo topics like mental health, anxiety and suicide.

Suicide can be difficult to understand and many of you may NEVER experience this kind of darkness, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

What is Suicide?

Suicide is the act of taking your own life voluntarily and intentionally. Suicide is complicated and tragic but, often times is preventable. Becoming more aware of suicide prevention is important for all of us. You don't have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Whether you're affected by suicide directly or indirectly - be present, be patient and be proactive.

It's important - now more than ever, as we all try to cope with the unknown, that we be there for each other and take the necessary steps to prevent suicide.

Also understand that despite our best efforts, people still choose suicide.

It's a terrifying, unsettling, heartbreaking thought, but realistically.. for some, that kind of darkness and pain never goes away.

Suicide doesn't discriminate. People of all genders, ethnicities and ages can be at risk. If you or someone you know needs emergency assistance, contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at (800)-273-8522. You can also find tons of helpful tips at Prevent Suicide NY. Simple acts of support, learning how to recognize and respond to warning signs, listening and checking in can make a huge difference and possibly save a life.

You may not always know what to do or have the right words but, try to be supportive, be patient and work together to overcome an obstacle many struggle to overcome.

Stop neglecting. Stop avoiding. Stop ignoring. You're only nurturing the very darkness they're trying to escape.
