Southern Spaghetti Sauce
What goes perfectly with Baked Spaghetti?
Jocelyn's Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce, using ingredients you may already have in your pantry. It's rich with tomatoes, herbs and flavors. The goal is to get you to ditch the store-bought pasta sauce for Miss Jocelyn's Southern Spaghetti Sauce.
Prep Time: 15 Minutes Cook Time: 30 Minutes Total Time: 45 Minutes
Here's what you'll need:
3 tbsp of extra virgin oil
1 lb ground beef and turkey
1 lb Italian sausage
Salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 cup of chopped onions
1/2 cup of chopped green peppers
1 tbsp of minced garlic
1 1/2 cans of crushed tomatoes, 28 ounces
1 can of tomato sauce, 29 ounces
2 tbsp of red wine
1/4 cup of chicken stock
1 tbsp of Italian seasoning
2 tbsp of granulated sugar
1/8 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes
Ready? Set. Go!
1. Add olive oil to a large pot over medium high heat on stove
2. Add ground beef, Italian sausage, onion, green pepper, salt and pepper
3. Cook until Brown
4. Add garlic and cook for 1 Minute
5. Add in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, red wine, chicken stock, Italian seasoning, sugar and red pepper flakes
6. Continue to simmer for 30-40 minutes, until sauce thickens
7. Enjoy :)
Side Notes from Jocelyn
Try different meat flavors when you're making the sauce - You can try meats like venison, ground turkey … even pepperoni to vary up the flavors.
Make it Vegan - You can make this vegetarian/ vegan by replacing the meats with vegetables or even lentils and also replacing the chicken-stock with vegetable stock.
You can remove the red wine completely and substitute it with the stock
Allow the flavors to simmer - Don't rush the cooking process for this sauce
For the flavors to truly develop - You must let them come together slowly
