Glued to The Seat

Who is Claudette Colvin?

Claudette Calvin is a pioneer of the 1950's civil rights movement, retired nurse aide, and former member of the NAACP Youth Council.

On March 2nd, 1955m nine months before Rosa Parks - Colvin was arrested when she refused to give up her seat in Montgomery, Alabama. As stated by Biography, Colvin was inspired by school lessons on the Constitution during Black History Month. After refusing to give up he seat, the bus driver contacted the police, and she was forcibly removed from the bus. She was charged with disturbing the peace, violating the segregation laws, battering and assaulting a police office, and convicted of all three charges.

Claudette Colvin is one of many historians we didn't learn about in school or see in our textbooks.

Finally, in the 2000's, Rev Joseph Rembert contacted Montgomery Councilmen - Charles Jinright and Tracy Larkin - passing a resolution for a proclamation, honoring Colvin in 2017, naming March 2nd, Claudette Colvin Day in Montgomery. Three years later, on March 16th, 2020, Councilman Larkin also arranged for a street to be named after Colvin - which should only be the beginning.

Claudette Colvin is 69 years old, and currently resides in the Bronx. Her stance, strength, and bravery is admirable, and we have the power to keep her name and story and alive.
